KPU, Bawaslu Affirm PSI Vote Shares Not Bumped Up

5 March 2024 17:12 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe recent spike in vote shares of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) led by Kaesang Pangarep in the General Elections Commission's (KPU) Recapitulation Information System or Sirekap has sparked public attention and controversy. Many parties alleged that the vote shares have been bumped up.

The Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) chief Rahmat Bagja refuted these allegations, stating that the agency's verification process has disproved them.

“Some of the cases have been verified and were not proven. We have also verified them to the field, such as to Cilegon. It’s been resolved. It’s spread on social media sites, isn’t it? [We also verified it to] Central Java and have been resolved gradually,” Bagja said in his statement in the KPU Office in Central Jakarta, on Monday, March 4.

According to him, the verification process showed that the vote shares for the so-called millennial party remained consistent in the vote count at the polling station level and district or regency level. “So [the accusations] are disproved.”

He further blamed Sirekap for failing to precisely read the numbers. “We are investigating it, and it turns out that Sirekap has inaccuracy in reading the numbers,” Bagja said.

The KPU seconded Bawaslu’s statement. The KPU member Idham Holik stated on March 4 that there was no vote inflation for the PSI.

Idham explained that the inaccuracy occurred in the optical character recognition (OCR) system which reads the actual vote document or C-1 Form to be displayed on the Sirekap.

Meanwhile, the KPU chief Hayim Asy’ari was tight-lipped when asked about the recent anomaly and the suspicious vote surge for PSI, stating that the vote counting was still ongoing.

He ensured that the KPU would track the data if there were complaints or requests for clarification.

The vote count for PSI drastically skyrocketed within 24 hours on March 1-2, from 2,300,600 to 2,399,469, bringing the vote share tally to 3.13 percent. For information, a party must secure at least four percent of the national votes to enter the parliament.
