In the Muslim world, dates are considered a delicacy and the most sought-after fruit during Ramadan. This fruit, with the Latin name Phoenix dactylifera, has a luscious and sweet taste that is perfect for breaking the fast and having suhoor or a pre-dawn meal.
Several types of dates are popular and available in Indonesia, sourced from Saudi Arabia to Africa. The list is as follows:
1. Medjool Dates
Medjool dates are known as the king of dates fruit. The caramel-like fruit has a chewy texture making it a delicacy among the nobles of the time.
These dates have a natural sweetness, a darker color, and a hole surrounded by flesh. According to Healthline, these dates originated in Morocco and are now grown in warm regions of the United States, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.
2. Ajwa Dates
Ajwa dates are one of the most expensive dates in the world. They have thick fruit flesh and are also rich in fiber, potassium, iron, protein, and antioxidants. Citing Kurma Dates, Ajwa date is cultivated exclusively in Al- Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The characters range from a dark brown, to a dark black color with white wrinkles. Ajwa dates are dry fruit and soft. These dates are well-known as one of the best Islamic traditional dishes, especially in the month of Ramadan.
3. Degleet Noor Dates
Compared to other dates, Degleet Noor dates do not have a very sweet taste. They have a bright yellow color and a fairly dry texture and originate from Tunisia and then spread to Libya, Algeria, and the United States.
4. Sukkari Dates
Sukkari dates are native to Saudi Arabia. In Arabic, sukkar means sugar, hence they are known for their sweet, juicy, and soft texture. The golden brown fruits are believed to be one of the favorite dates of Arab kings.
5. Safawi Dates
Similar to Medjool dates, Safawi dates have a dark brown color with a chewy and thick flesh texture. According to Kurma Dates, Safawi dates are mainly grown in the Al Madinah region of Saudi Arabia. It has smooth and slightly dry characteristics.
