TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Java Regional Police Chief Insp. Gen. Imam Sugianto said the explosion at the Bomb Disposal Sub-Department office of the East Java Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) in Surabaya injured 10 police officers.
"I can confirm that there were no fatalities, so only 10 victims were injured," the East Java regional police chief told reporters after inspecting the site of the explosion on Monday afternoon, March 4.
At the time of the blast, the officers were conducting post-explosion training in a room about 10 meters away from the main blast site or explosives warehouse. The officers were injured by broken glass from the explosion.
The regional police chief confirmed that all the police personnel who were victims of this morning's explosion have received intensive care at the police health facility.
On Monday morning, residents of Jalan Gresik were shocked by the sound of an explosion coming from the East Java Military Police Sub-Department (Subdenpom) I office.
East Java Police Chief Insp. Gen. Imam Sugianto suspects that the explosion was caused by the remnants of explosives that were to be destroyed or disposed of. "As it happens, the East Java Police bomb squad does not yet have a standard warehouse. So they store the leftovers and remnants of explosives in a space next to their office," Imam said, as quoted by Antara.
