TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, unveiled his plans to make the new capital, or IKN, a bustling and vibrant city within a decade. He said the government was actively preparing various public facilities to support this goal.
“We estimate that in the next ten years, this city will be a lively city, that would be home to many of our people,” he said during a visit to IKN in East Kalimantan on Thursday, February 29.
He further added that the relocation of the state civil apparatus (ASN) to IKN would be carried out in stages, while the supporting infrastructure was being prepared.
“For example, [we are building] a residential area, which is the most important thing, and then schools for their children and hospitals,” the former governor of Jakarta said.
He acknowledged that the process of preparing the supporting infrastructure was not easy and would take time.
However, he confirmed that he would move the office to IKN once the toll road and airport infrastructure in the area are completed. Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono would be the first to move to IKN.
“Pak Basuki [will move to IKN in] June or July. I'm waiting for the airport and the toll road to be finished,” said Jokowi.
