TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has announced a new batch of the pre-employment program to improve people's skills and competitiveness to enter the job market.

Chairperson of the Job Creation Committee, Airlangga Hartarto, in a statement released by his office on Friday, said that the program, which was launched in 2020, has benefited 17.5 million people in Indonesia.

"Today, a new batch of the pre-employment program is open, targeting 1.14 million participants," he informed.

Hartarto, who is also serving as the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, said that the government is seeking to improve the quality of the pre-employment program with additional training modes that support flexibility and accessibility, especially for participants from the eastern region of Indonesia.

The government has reinstated asynchronous training (delayed learning) to cater for the time difference between the western and eastern regions, he informed.

"We believe that by strengthening various fields, this program will bring more benefits to our people," the minister added.

In 2024, the pre-employment program will collaborate with more training institutions to provide a variety of quality trainings that are relevant to the needs of the job market, he said.

According to him, the program will also reach more communities in remote and underdeveloped areas, as well as encourage the involvement of training institutions in many areas.

The training will follow the independent learning mode, which cannot be skipped or fast-tracked by participants.

Although this mode can provide flexibility, it requires higher personal commitment from participants.

"Our resources need to be equipped with relevant capabilities. Training for large-scale up-skilling and re-skilling, such as pre-employment, should be continued," Hartarto emphasized.

The program has several eligibility criteria: applicants must not have participated in the program previously; they must be aged 18–64; and, they must not currently be pursuing formal education.

The program is open to persons who are looking for work; workers who have been laid off or who need to increase their work competency; workers who are not receiving wages, including micro and small business actors; and workers who are not affiliated with state institutions, state-owned enterprises, region-owned enterprises, House of Representatives, and Regional Representatives Council.

Lastly, a maximum of two identity numbers from one family can be used for the Pre-Employment Card.
Registrations for the program were scheduled to open on the www.prakerja.go.id website from 7 p.m. local time Friday.
