TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated Makassar New Port (MNP), a new logistics gateway in eastern Indonesia, today, Feb. 22. He hoped that MNP would suppress logistics costs in the country, especially in the eastern region.
“This port will be a large port in eastern Indonesia which we hope can streamline logistics costs in our homeland,” he said in an official statement quoted on Thursday, Feb. 22.
He mentioned that ten years ago, domestic logistics costs reached 24 percent, while other countries were in the range of 9 to 12 percent. This was due to a lack of integration between ports and industrial zones.
“Now, our logistics costs have fallen by approximately 14 percent. It has dropped a lot but it is still slightly higher than in other countries. This is our collective homework,” Jokowi said.
He also highlighted the dwelling time, which used to be five to seven days and was very inefficient. It has now been successfully cut to less than three days. The dwelling time is the total time from the time a container is unloaded and lifted from the ship until it leaves the port through the main gate.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi reiterated that the MNP aims to strengthen Makassar's role as a logistics gateway in Indonesia's eastern region and to support international trade route connectivity. He claimed that the new port was ready to accommodate large ships from all over the world.
“Moreover, its current capacity has reached 2.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year,” he said, adding that the MNP could boost economic growth and equitable development in eastern Indonesia.
