BMKG Forecast Extreme Weather in Central Java Within the Next 3 Days

19 February 2024 18:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecast an increasingly high probability of extreme weather in Central Java from February 19 to 21. These conditions will manifest in the form of moderate-heavy rains with thunder, lightning, and strong winds.

This is caused by the atmospheric dynamics, specifically the Asian monsoon, which results in increased humid air masses in the western and southern parts of Indonesia at the equator, including around Central Java.

Yoga Sambodo, the head of the Ahmad Yani Semarang Meteorological Station, said they were monitoring convergence zones and wind bends around Central Java. “Unstable condition supporting local-scale convective processes is being observed in Central Java,” he said in a written statement on Monday, February 19, 2024.

The agency further warned that today, extreme weather is likely to hit Banyumas, Purbalinga, Banjarnegara, Wonosobo, Magelang Regency, Magelang City, Boyolali, Karanganyar, Temanggung, Pekalongan Regency, Salatiga, Semarang Regency, and surrounding areas.

On February 20, the bad weather will affect Cilacap, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Wonosobo, Magelang Regency, Magelang City, Boyolali, Karanganyar, Klaten, Semarang Regency, Temanggung, Pekalongan Regency, and Salatiga, and surrounding areas.

On February 21, extreme weather still has the potential to occur in most of the same locations as the previous day but is slightly extended to Sragen, Grobogan, Kendal, and Batang.

BMKG called on the public to remain vigilant of extreme weather, which has the potential to cause flooding, landslides, and strong winds. “Especially for people residing in areas prone to hydrometeorological disasters,” Yoga stressed.
