TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi responded to questions about the possibility of a one-round election. “Let's all just wait,” he said when met at the polling station (TPS) 10, Gambir, Central Jakarta today, Feb. 14.
Calls for a one-round election echoed throughout the campaign period, which ended last Saturday, Feb. 11, 2024. The supporters of Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka were on the frontline and were optimistic about winning the presidential election in a single round.
With three running candidates, the requirements for a one-round election include gaining more than 50 percent votes nationwide with 20 percent votes in at least 20 Indonesian provinces. Failure to achieve this bar would result in a dual-round election, slated for June 26.
Jokowi did not elaborate on his statement. He also claimed no communication with Gibran was established before casting his votes. Jokowi hoped for a free and just ‘democracy party’, a joyous momentum for Indonesian citizens.
The latest polls from Survei Indikator Politik Indonesia showed Prabowo-Gibran as the top contender with 51.8 percent, followed by Anies-Muhaimin with 24.1 percent, and Ganjar-Mahfud with 19.6 percent. Several political observers expected the ‘party’ to shape up as a dual-round election.
