TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan stated that Elon Musk would invest in the country’s new capital city, IKN, located in East Kalimantan. He said the CEO of SpaceX intends to introduce the Starlink internet network at IKN.
Starlink is an advanced satellite-based internet service provided by SpaceX, Elon Musk's rocket company.
Luhut disclosed that he had communicated with Elon Musk on Feb. 2 regarding the installation of Starlink internet at IKN. “Starlink wants to join. We think the requirements have almost been completed. He (Elon Musk) will visit IKN,” the senior minister said on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
Elon Musk has been rumored to have shown interest in investing in Indonesia before. Tesla, his renowned electric vehicle company, was rumored to have been planning a significant investment in Indonesia for an electric vehicle battery project. However, the investment was later reported to have been canceled.
On August 14, 2023, Luhut confirmed that Tesla had decided to postpone a number of investment realizations worldwide for the next 1.5 years.
