IESR Says Govt Plan to Lower Renewable Energy Target 'Disavows Commitment to Net Zero Emission'

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) responded to the Indonesian government's plan to lower the new renewable energy (NRE) mix target to 17-19 percent by 2025.

"This disavows Indonesia's commitment to achieve net zero emission by 2060," Fabby Tumiwa, Director of IESR, said in an online discussion on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The government previously targeted 23 percent EBT and 40-45 percent EBT by 2030.

This target regression also diverged from the actions taken by other countries relating to the results of COP28, the UN's annual meeting to discuss climate issues.

The Dubai conference last year resulted in a commitment to transition from fossil-based fuel oil, he said. "To prevent global temperature rise under 2 degrees, and even 1.5 degrees," Fabby said.

Earlier, the National Energy Council (DEN) revised the NRE mix through the National Energy Policy (KEN) into 19-21 percent by 2030, 38-41 percent by 2040, and 70-72 percent by 2060.

DEN, however, admitted that the revision has not been green-lighted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi. The revision was intended to ensure the target is achievable.
