China Dominates Foreign Investment in Indonesia's Maritime Sector: KKP

5 February 2024 18:08 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reported that the investment in the country’s maritime and fisheries sector reached Rp9.56 trillion as of the third quarter of 2023. Of the figure, domestic investment amounted to Rp5.32 trillion, foreign investment amounted to Rp1.4 trillion, and investment credit amounted to Rp2.84 trillion.

“The largest foreign investment realization comes from China, reaching Rp370.74 billion, followed by Malaysia with Rp240.4 billion and Switzerland with Rp152.89 billion,” KKP Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said at the Indonesia Marine and Fisheries Business Forum 2024 in Jakarta Fairmont Hotel, on Monday, February 5, 2024.

Based on the business sector, Trenggono explained that the fish processing sector ranked first with an investment of Rp3.65 trillion, followed by fisheries cultivation at Rp2.6 trillion, marketing at Rp1.95 trillion, fishing at Rp1.18 trillion, and fishery services at Rp186.51 billion.

“Therefore, the development of the marine and fisheries sector must prioritize ecology,” Trenggono stressed.

The minister also said that the percentage of people experiencing food shortages increased from 7.9 percent in 2019 to 9.2 percent in 2022, according to the 2023 Food And Agriculture Organization (FAO) data.

“Food is expected to remain a major issue as the global population grows over time,” he added.

Trenggono estimated that the world's population would increase by 30 percent by 2050, reaching 9.7 billion people. “The hike in population leads to rising protein need by 70 percent, which comes from marine biological resources,” he said. “This growth will create enormous opportunities for the industry and its business players.”
