Earthquakes Hit Padang, Cianjur This Morning; No Tsunami Potential

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Earthquakes hit a couple of regions in Indonesia this morning. In Mentawai, Padang, Agam, Padang Pariaman, a 5.4-magnitude quake shook the region at 07:52 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time). The epicenter was located 90 kilometers away southeast of Tuapejat, West Sumatra.

The 34-kilometer-deep earthquake was felt at III MMI at the intensity scale. "The earthquake was shallow and associated with the Mentawai's fault structure," said the head of the earthquake and tsunami center of the meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency or BMKG Daryono. 

According to Daryono, the earthquake will not potentially cause a tsunami.

Aside from West Sumatra, BMKG also recorded a 2.9-magnitude earthquake in Cianjur, West Java. The strongest vibration was felt in Cugenang at III MMI at the intensity scale.

The earthquake occurred at 08:52 WIB, with an epicenter at 7 kilometers northwest of Cianjur and a 6-kilometer depth on land. Two minutes after a weaker aftershock hits with a 2.1-magnitude and an epicenter 6 kilometers northwest of Cianjur, with 9-kilometer depth.

BMKG has not released any additional information on this earthquake but based on the location, the latest one was caused by activities on Cugenang Fault.
