10 Most Influential Muslim Women in Islamic History

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There are a number of women who have had a big influence on Islamic history. The contribution of these female figure were enormous and even helped the Prophet Muhammad SAW in spreading the words of Allah SWT. Not only that, some of them also master certain fields of science.

The Most Influential Muslim Women in Islamic History

Quoting muhammadiyah.or.id, here is a list of the most influential Muslim women in Islam who have made great contributions to life:

1. Khadijah bint Khuwailid

Before being proposed to by the Prophet, Khadijah worked as a rich merchant in Mecca. It plays an important role in supporting the economy and spreading Islamic law. She also maintained the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad through his two sons, namely al-Hasan and al-Husain.

2. Fatimah al-Zahra bint Muhammad

This daughter of the Prophet Muhammad from his first wife Khadijah contributed to the formation of early Muslim communities in Medina and Mecca. Fatimah and her family experienced great pressure from the Quraysh before emigrating. Then, she married Ali bin Abi Talib who was also an important figure in Islam.

3. Nusaiba bint Ka'ab al-Anshariyyah

Nusaiba, also known as Umm Ammara, is on the list of the most influential Muslim women in Islamic history. She was a member of the Bani Najjar tribe and one of the Prophet's companions who was the earliest to embrace Islam. Umm Ammara is known to have fought with a sword and shield in the Battle of Uhud.

4. Aisyah bint Abu Bakr

The youngest wife of the Prophet, namely Aisyah, daughter of Abu Bakar, contributed to activities in spreading the teachings of Islam. Aisyah is one of the main narrators of hadith in the Sunni tradition. Her actions had a huge impact on the presence of women in public spaces, which at that time clashed with conservative concepts.

5. Asma bint Abu Bakar

Aisyah bint Abu Bakar's sister, Asma, is also one of the influential women in Islamic history. Asma became the wife of al-Zubair bin al-Awwam and became an intellectual figure during the first century of the Islamic era. She was seen as a friend of the Prophet who was intelligent, steadfast and brave because she took part in the Battle of Yarmuk against the Byzantines.

6. Umm al-Darda Hujaima bint Uyayy as-Sughra

Umm al-Darda was one of the second generation of scholars after the Prophet Muhammad. She is included in the list of the most influential Muslim women in history. She was a hadith narrator, teacher, and also a legal expert. She translated the history of Aisyah, Salman al-Farisi, and Abu Hurairah.

7. Rabiah al-Adawiyyah

Rabiah spent most of her youth as a slave in southern Iraq. After achieving freedom, she became a respected Sufi founder of the 'Divine Love' school of thought. In her view, she emphasizes always loving Allah unconditionally. This means that she does not respect the Almighty Creator simply because she is afraid of hell or has hopes for entering heaven.

8. Fatimah al-Fihri

Fatimah al-Fihri is the daughter of Mohammed Bnou Abdullah al-Fihri. Her father was a successful merchant in Fez, Morocco. When she inherited wealth from her father, she actually invested her wealth in mosques and educational institutions. One of her works was the establishment of al-Qarawiyyin or Al-Karouine University which is still operating today.

9. Lubna

Lubna was a slave from Spain who became an important figure at the Umayyad court, Cordoba. She was appointed as palace secretary to Abd al-Rahman III and al-Hakam bin Abd al-Rahman. Lubna is also good at mathematics and leads a library that has a collection of more than 500,000 books.

10. Fatimah bint Muhammad bin Ahmad as-Samarqand

Fatimah is the daughter of the Hanafi jurist, Abu Manshur Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Samarqand. Her father was the author of the book Tuhfat al-Fuhaqa. She is recognized as one of the most influential Muslim women in Islamic history because she is an expert in grammar, hadith, jurisprudence and theology.
