Anies Baswedan Promises to Form Special Unit on Workers' Rights if Elected

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential candidate number one Anies Baswedan promised to form a special unit to respond to workers' complaints. Anies relayed the statement during a "Desak Anies & Slepet Amin" event with workers and online drivers at JIExpo Kemayoran on Monday, Jan. 29.

"We want to know what step [Anies] as the president will take so companies facilitate our rights?" an audience in the campaign event asked the former Jakarta Governor.

In response, Anies vowed to form a special unit or agency to tackle the issue. "The special unit is authorized to respond to reports and complaints about workers' rights that [companies] failed to facilitate, and to ensure workers enjoy their rights," he said.

According to Anies Baswedan, written obligations must be honored by every party, and the state ought to side with justice. The employment contract, he went on, is a benchmark to said justice.

"What does justice mean? [It means] a contract must be heeded. If a [employment] contract is violated, the state will exercise its power to force parties to abide by the contract," he said.

The agency, or the special unit, is necessary since disputes between employers and workers are still rampant, especially in regions away from the scrutiny of the media. He also highlighted workers' weak bargaining power before their companies. Speaking up for these workers could end in unemployment.

Hence, Anies Baswedan said this agency will protect the anonymity of its users, using the JAKI super-app in Jakarta as an example. "Not only the problem is solved, the reporter is saved," Anies concluded.
