TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) released a weather forecast for today, January 29, stating that most regions of the country would be hit by heavy rainfall of up to 50 millimeters per day with thunders and strong winds.
The agency’s Deputy for Meteorology outlined that the regions include all provinces in Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi.
Today’s weather would be influenced by the cyclonic circulation observed in the Pacific Ocean north of West Papua and the Indian Ocean southwest of Java. This condition created areas of convergence leading to increased growth of rain clouds in the vicinity.
The agency also said it was not monitoring any active tropical cyclone seeds.
In a separate statement, Eddy Hermawan, the lead expert researcher at the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center of the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN), assessed that the rain in Indonesia is currently influenced by the mass of water vapor from Siberia, El Nino, and the apparent position of the sun's movement.
Eddy explained that El Nino was still moving towards its peak in January 2024. However, the peak of the rainy season has already occurred in December 2023.
