Indonesian Govt Aims IKN Airport Trial to Start in July

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi targeted the operational trial for Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Airport to start this July. The minister inspected the Nusantara Airport's development progress in IKN on Wednesday.

According to Budi Karya, construction works and operational preparation will be conducted from January to July. "The development will be expedited by adding more equipment, work hours, and finalization concerning lands," he said.

The IKN Airport will support governmental services and connectivities in IKN. The airport is located 23 kilometers away from IKN's 0 point and 120 kilometers from Balikpapan.

The airport has a 7,350-meter square terminal on 347 hectares of land. The runway stretches along 3,000 meters with a 45-meter width and capable of handling big airplanes such as the Boeing 777-3000ER and Airbus A380.

The Transportation Minister will also inspect the potential location for Automated Rail Transit after. "The autonomous train or ART will be located in the west and east axes of IKN. Targeted to start partial operation in August," he said. 

The development of ART will be conducted in 2 phases for one set of trains with 2 cars and a 324-passenger capacity. The operational speed of ART will be 40 kmh and a maximum speed of 70 kmh. "The train uses batteries substituted with road markings and magnets," the minister concluded.
