Strong Earthquake Hits Kazakhstan, China's Xinjiang; Indonesians Confirmed Safe

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck Kazakhstan and China’s western Xinjiang region on Tuesday, January 23.
The Indonesian Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, M. Fadjroel Rachman, confirmed that Indonesian citizens in the affected areas are in safe condition.
“Since last night, we have been in contact with Indonesian citizens in Almaty and Astana, all of them are safe and healthy. Until this morning, we are still monitoring the situation, and everyone said that no one experienced anything untoward,” Fadjroel said.
According to him, the Indonesian Embassy in Astana continues to monitor further developments following the strong quake. He reiterated that Indonesian citizens in Astana and Almaty were all safe and sound when the quake struck in the early hours of Tuesday.
The quake struck in the border region of Kazakhstan and Xinjiang, China. It was reported at a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents in Almaty left their homes and gathered outside despite the cold and freezing weather. No damage was reported.
Meanwhile, the local authorities reported that six people were injured and more than 120 homes were damaged or collapsed due to the earthquake in China.
