TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tanah Abang Market, Southeast Asia’s largest textile wholesale center in Jakarta, introduced a new shopping center dubbed Little Bangkok to lure customers back to offline shopping. It is located on the first floor of Jembatan Metro (JMTA), which connects the market’s Blok B to Tanah Abang Metro.
The shopping area was officially opened on January 15, 2024, and was inspired by the trend of live online shopping through jastip or buying services with celebrities in Bangkok, Thailand.
One of the traders, Maria (36), expressed her gratitude for the new place as it helped her attract new customers. “Many people come here because they can purchase at least two items at semi-wholesale prices,” she told Tempo on January 17.
Maria also offers her products, which are mostly jeans pants, skirts, and hot pants or shorts, online via social media platforms, Instagram and TikTok. She claimed that they are locally made, with denim skirts starting from Rp87,000 and denim pants starting from Rp97,000. She can earn a daily turnover of Rp5 million up to Rp20 million.
Before opening a store in Little Bangkok, Maria had a store at the Tanah Abang wholesale center, which was specifically for wholesalers.
Little Bangkok is open Monday to Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and transactions can be made in cash or cashless using debit cards or QRIS.
As previously reported, Tanah Abang Market had a 50 percent drop in turnover due to the increasing trend of online shopping on e-commerce platforms, including TikTok Shop.
