3 Killed, 28 Injured in Turangga Train Crash in Bandung

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Java Regional Police reported that three people died in the train collision in Bandung this morning, January 5, at 06:03 local time. The accident involved two trains, namely the Turangga Train (KA Turangga) and the Greater Bandung Local Commuter Line.
“Until now, the dead victims are KRD Lokal Padalarang Cicalengka train driver Julian Dwi Setiono and the assistant Ponisan and the Turangga Train steward Andrian, 22,” the West Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Ibrahim Tompo said in a statement, on Friday.
Additionally, at least 28 people were injured and evacuated to Cicalengka Regional Hospital.
State-owned rail operator PT KAI and the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) immediately launched an investigation. “To find out the cause of the accident,” said PT KAI Vice President of Public Relations, Joni Martinus, as quoted from Antara.
Authorities also evacuated the two trains and repaired the damaged railway lines. “KAI will divert the routes of trains [scheduled] to pass the damaged rail tracks,” Joni added.
Raden Agus Dwinanto Budiadji, PT KAI’s EVP of Corporate Secretary, said the Haurpugur-Cicalengka railway line was temporarily impassable due to the accident.
PT KAI also apologized for the service disruption caused by the collision between the Turangga train serving the Surabaya Gubeng-Bandung route and the Bandung Commuter Line at KM 181+700 between Haurpugur Station and Cicalengka Station.
