BMKG: No Tsunami Potential from Earthquake in West Java and Banten

3 January 2024 11:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake rocked the West Java and Banten regions on Wednesday, January 3, at 07:53:49 local time (WIB/Western Indonesian Time).

The agency noted that the earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale and did not have the potential to generate a tsunami. It was detected at 7.57 degrees south latitude and 106.17 degrees east longitude, or precisely in the sea at 77 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi, and at a depth of 63 kilometers.

“Looking at the epicenter and the hypocenter, the quake was an intermediate quake caused by the deformation of rocks in the Indo-Australian plate, which was subducted under the Eurasian Plate,” said the agency’s head of quake and tsunami center, Daryono, in his statement, on Wednesday.

A fairly strong tremor reached the Surade area, Sukabumi with a magnitude of IV MMI, and Pelabuhan Ratu, Cianjur, Panggarangan, Lebak, and Garut with a magnitude of III MMI.

The earthquake's shaking was also felt in the areas of Lembang, West Bandung, and Cimahi at an intensity scale of II-III MMI, and in the area of South Tangerang at an intensity scale of II MMI.

As of 08:30 WIB, the BMKG has not recorded any aftershocks.
