Lewotobi Eruption; Wings Air Cancels 5 Maumere Flights for Safety Reasons

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wings Air has announced the temporary suspension of flight operations to and from Frans Seda Airport in Maumere, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, which had been closed following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi on January 1. The airline official said that this cancelation is a step to prioritize aspects safety and security.

"In accordance with the official notification from the civil aviation authority, the airport is closed until 11:35 on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, due to the impact of the eruption of Mount Lewotobi," Wings Air corporate communications strategic officer Danang Mandala Prihantoro said in a written statement, Tuesday 2 January.

Danang said that five flights had been canceled on January 1 and 2. They are:

January 1

1. Flight IW-1961 from Labuan Bajo (LBJ) to Maumere (MOF)

2. Flight IW-1960 from Maumere (MOF) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ)

3. Flight IW-1829 from Kupang (KOE) to Maumere (MOF)

January 2

4. Flight IW-1829P from Kupang (KOE) to Maumere (MOF)

5. Flight IW-1828 from Maumere (MOF) to Kupang (KOE)

Wings Air, a member of the Lion Air Group, hopes it can resume flights to and from Maumere once the aviation authority declares Frans Seda Airport is safe.

Mount Lewotobi Laki in East Flores erupted again on Monday, January 1, following a raised alert status from Level II to Level III. On December 23 last year, the volcano erupted for the first time since October 2002.
