10 Festive Places in Jakarta to Celebrate New Year

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAs the year comes to a close, many cities in Indonesia are bustling with festive activities and colorful fireworks that light up the skyline to usher in the New Year. Jakarta, known for its frenetic beauty of the lights from its skyscrapers, offers some perfect places to bid farewell to 2023 and welcome 2024.

If you are in Jakarta and looking for a place to ring in the New Year, here are ten recommended places:

1. Ancol

Ancol Dreamland Park in North Jakarta is one of the most popular places for Jakartans to spend New Year's Eve. The park offers many attractive events, including a music concert at Ancol Carnival Beach featuring top musicians.

2. Hotel Indonesia or HI Roundabout 

Hotel Indonesia or HI Roundabout in Central Jakarta is one of the iconic places to celebrate the New Year. A dazzling fireworks display at exactly midnight will light up the sky, along with entertainment stages featuring many musicians.

3. Gelora Bung Karno (GBK)

The Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area in Senayan, Central Jakarta usually offers various exciting entertainment events every night at the end of the year. On several occasions, music concerts and culinary festivals are often held in the area.

4. Jakarta International Expo (JIEXPO)

Jakarta International Expo or JIEXPO in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta is set to hold the annual music concert to welcome the new year. Through its official Instagram account, @jiexpo_id, the concert dubbed Pesta Tahun Baru will be held for two days on Dec. 30 and 31, featuring Maliq & D'essentials, Kahitna, Nadin Amizah, Hindia, The Sigit, and many more.

5. Jalan Sudirman-MH Thamrin

Malam Muda Mudi or the Night of the Youth festival is back along Jalan Sudirman-MH Thamrin organized by the Jakarta provincial government. The festival features displays of fireworks in the night sky over a cityscape of skyscrapers.

6. Kota Tua 

Kota Tua or the Old Town is another New Year's celebration place that is worth visiting in Jakarta, where spectacular fireworks take place throughout the night.

7. National Monument (Monas)

The National Monument or Monas in Central Jakarta is one of the iconic buildings in the metropolis. Every New Year's Eve, the city administration usually prepares various exciting activities. However, no information has been released yet for the upcoming festive midnight.

8. Pantai Indah Kapuk or PIK 2

PIK 2 is a new popular destination in the city. The New Year’s Eve celebration on the reclaimed island is one of the most anticipated events. Visitors can also visit Batavia PIK, Golf Island, and Pantjoran Chinatown.

9. Setu Babakan

Setu Babakan is known as the center of Betawi culture in the city. Located in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, it always has a celebration event before New Year's Eve with a Betawi culture theme.

10. Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII)

For the New Year's Eve celebration, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) cultural park announced on its official Instagram that it will hold a myriad of events from December 20, 2023, until January 2, 2024. These include workshops, culinary festivals, stand-up comedy, wayang kulit or traditional shadow puppetry, fashion shows, playgrounds, and music concerts.
