TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Christmas carols return to Jakarta, with performances taking place at five different sites throughout the city. The provincial government designated the Cultural Bridge in Kota Tua and the southwest cross of the National Monument or Monas as the locations on December 21 and 22, starting from 16:00 to 18:00 local time.
On Friday, December 22, the festivities will be held at the pedestrian area of Plaza Indonesia, HI Roundabout; the pedestrian area of Djakarta Theater near Sarinah, and the Jakarta Creative Zone Riverview by JXB near BNI City Station, all starting at the same time.
“It has become Jakarta's regular agenda to enliven the Christmas celebration,” the Head of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, Andhika Permata, said in a written statement, on Thursday, Dec. 21.
Christmas Carol is part of the Christmas in Jakarta program initiated by former governor Anies Baswedan to showcase Jakarta's cultural diversity and inclusivity, in which choirs perform in public spaces in the capital to enliven the Christmas spirit. It was held for the first time on December 18-20, 2019.
“Through this event, we want to convey the message that Jakarta is a diverse global city [that is] open to all people,” Andhika added.
He said the provincial government provides equal opportunities for Jakarta's diverse and heterogeneous citizens to celebrate religious holidays. The Christmas Carol is one of the efforts to maintain religious equality in the city.
The Jakarta administration also invited residents to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays in the city. People can explore various attractions and tourist destinations, with more information available on the city's tourism website Jakcation.id.
