TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A series of days without rain in the middle of the rainy season known as a dry spell in Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek continues today, Dec. 20. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted no chance of rain in the capital city and its vicinity as has been occurring for over a past week.
Jakarta’s weather was forecast to be partly sunny throughout the day, with the maximum daily temperature reaching 35 degrees Celsius in West Jakarta.
Its neighbors, namely Bekasi, Cibinong (Bogor Regency), Depok, and Bogor City will also have partly sunny weather. The maximum daily temperature is expected to be 34 degrees Celsius in Bekasi and 33 degrees Celsius in the other three regions.
Meanwhile, the weather in Greater Tangerang will be clear with no clouds this morning, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon and cloudy tonight. The maximum temperature for the day is expected to reach 34 degrees Celsius.
Dry monsoon and strong El Nino
Earlier, Erma Yulihastin, a climatologist at BRIN's Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research, said that the dry spell has not only affected the Jakarta area but also most of Java.
Rain clouds are leaving Indonesian territory, one of which is due to the peak of El Nino. Since last October, she revealed the anomaly of the sea surface temperature in the eastern Pacific Ocean which has warmed by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. “In the scientific literature, this has been classified as a strong El Nino,” Erma explained.
The researcher noted that Jakarta has been experiencing dry spells since December 12. “Beware of the dry rainy season in December, January, and February.”
