TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida have agreed on cooperation in strengthening food security and digital transformation at the Commemorative Summit of the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation.

The summit was held in Tokyo, Japan, from December 17 to 18, 2023.

"The five-decade-long relationship between ASEAN and Japan is an important momentum in preparing future cooperation so that the region can become more stable and resilient amid very dynamic geopolitical and geoeconomic situations," Jokowi stated in a statement released on Monday.

Cooperation on food and energy security between Indonesia and Japan is strengthened by increasing food supply, productivity, and supply chain by developing technology and supplying fertilizers.

In addition, the two countries agreed on the harmonization of agricultural commodity standards.

In the energy sector, Japan is ASEAN's important partner in accelerating the transition to new and renewable energy that is just, inclusive, and affordable.

"ASEAN-Japan cooperation can increase investment and transfer of low-carbon technology for the development of the ASEAN Green Supergrid and carbon economy utilization," Jokowi remarked.

The cooperation between the two in energy is also based on digital transformation.

"The digital economy potential in the region is immense and will reach US$1 trillion in 2030, and with the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), it is projected to reach US$2 trillion," he stated.

DEFA entered the first round of negotiations on December 1, 2023, and is targeted to be completed in 2025.

The ASEAN-Japan partnership in the digital economy is carried out through skills development programs and digital connectivity infrastructure expansion.

The partnership also encourages the integration of the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) into the digital ecosystem.
