Earthquakes Destroy Hundreds of Houses in Bogor and Sukabumi

11 December 2023 22:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA series of earthquakes originating from land destroyed at least 144 houses in Bogor and Sukabumi, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported on Saturday, Dec. 9.

The quake and tsunami center of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, said the damage caused by the quake depended on its magnitude, distance, and depth of origin.

“Even though the quake’s magnitude was 4.0, its depth was 5 kilometers, so the ground motion was strong enough to cause slight damage,” Daryono said on Monday, Dec. 11.

The 4.0 magnitude quake struck Bogor, Sukabumi, and Cianjur in the early hours of Dec. 8 at 02:00 local time. The agency recorded that the tremor’s intensity was the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) level III.

The source was detected at 6.73 degrees South Latitude and 106.61 degrees East Longitude, or about 25 kilometers southwest of the center of Bogor City, and was at a depth of five kilometers.

Earlier on Wednesday, Dec. 6, two 3.0-magnitude quakes shook the Sukabumi area, West Bogor, Cisolok, Bayah, and Leuwiliang, at 20:20 and 21:20 local time, with an intensity scale between II - III MMI.

Daryono said the ground movement from the series of quakes shook the building, causing the structure to weaken.

According to BMKG, the cause of the series of earthquakes was local fault movement. “It's a swarm quake, and it is related to the interaction between volcanism and faults,” Daryono said. He also denied that the quake came from Mount Salak, but a continuation of the 2019 swarm.
