Govt Launches Free Homecoming Program Ahead of Year-End Holiday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry through the Directorate General of Land Transportation has launched a Free Homecoming (Mudik Gratis) program for motorcycle users. This program is initiated in anticipation of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

According to a ministry survey, the number of people traveling during this upcoming holiday is estimated to reach 107.63 million people or 39.83 percent of the total national population. The majority of them will travel using private vehicles such as cars and motorcycles.

Director of Road Transport Suharto mentioned that car users during this holiday are estimated to reach 39.97 million people or 35.57 of the estimated travelers. Meanwhile, the number of motorcycle users will reach 20.14 million people or 17.92 percent.

"Thus, as instructed by Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and the Land Transportation DG Hendro Sugiatno, we will launch a free homecoming program during the Christmas and New Year holidays," he said in a statement as quoted by Tempo today. 

The designated quota for this free homecoming program is 3,600 people with 90 inter-province buses and four trucks able to transport 120 units of motorcycles.

The passenger will depart on Saturday, Dec. 23 from Kampung Rambutan Terminal and Pulo Gebang Integrated Terminal while the motorcycles will depart on Friday, Dec. 22 from Pondok Cabe Type A Terminal.

The online registration for this free homecoming program is conducted from Dec. 5 to 20 through the Mitra Darat app. The passengers also must verify their registration directly at the Transportation Ministry office or the GOR Bulungan Blok M in Jakarta, and the Pondok Cabe Terminal in South Tangerang.

Several routes are available for this program where each destination will board 40 passengers. "Around 63 buses will depart from Pulo Gebang Terminal for 2,520 passengers and 27 buses from Kampung Rambutan Terminal for 1,080 passengers," he said.
