TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike to discuss synergies in dealing with climate change, especially within the framework of the Jakarta-Tokyo sister city cooperation since 1989.

"Jakarta is increasing innovation to solve urban problems, improving the quality of public services, and building an increasingly transparent government as well. In line with this, Jakarta continues to develop cooperation with various global cities in the world, including Tokyo," Hartono stated in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

Hartono and Koike discussed experiences and policies to overcome urban challenges and climate change as a joint effort to create innovative solutions. The meeting also discussed further cooperation programs between the two cities in 2024.

During the meeting, Hartono remarked that Jakarta had been appointed to host the 2024 Crisis Management Conference.

The conference is a forum to exchange experiences regarding disaster mitigation policies and practices initiated by Tokyo, he stated.

"We are honored to host the conference next year. We are committed to ensuring that this international event will bring positive impacts on cities in managing disasters," Hartono remarked.

Jakarta and Tokyo have implemented sister-city cooperation since 1989 within the framework of officials visits, sports and youth delegations, visits from technical personnel, and visits from vocational training delegations.

In its development, cooperation between the two cities has grown and includes the fields of culture, youth and sports, health, environmental sustainability, and disaster control.

Earlier, Hartono and Melbourne Mayor Sally Capp also discussed flood management and climate change at a bilateral meeting to explore cooperation plans.

"We found out that Melbourne and Jakarta have similar challenges, such as flooding, rising sea levels, and climate change," he remarked on Monday (December 4).

Hartono stated that both parties spotlighted various efforts they made to face challenges, such as sustainable urban development, climate change mitigation action, internship exchanges for public service employees, and exploring relations between sister cities.
