TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Health on Tuesday reported that cases of monkeypox (mpox) have been detected in five Indonesian provinces based on the latest count.

The provinces are Jakarta, West Java, Banten, Riau Islands, and East Java.

"The total mpox (cases) as of November 20, 2023, reached 51 cases confirmed, and 30 patients (out) of those have recovered," head of the ministry's communication and public service bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, confirmed on Tuesday, November 21, 2023..

According to the report, Jakarta has recorded the highest number of mpox cases at 38, with 23 of the patients recovering so far.

Meanwhile, West Java has recorded six mpox cases and two recoveries, while Banten has detected five cases, with all of the patients recovering from the infection.

Meanwhile, Riau Islands and East Java have recorded one case each, and the patients are currently in the recovery process.

According to Tarmizi, mpox vaccinations are currently only available in Jakarta due to the limited number of vaccines.

The Ministry of Health has readied 4,500 doses of the mpox vaccine and 1,008 bottles of the antiviral drug tecovirimat to treat patients.

She appealed to people not to engage in risky sexual activities to prevent mpox transmission.

As per data from the Health Ministry, confirmed cases of mpox are generally being detected in homosexual men with the comorbidities of HIV and syphilis.

Mpox usually begins with a headache, which is followed by symptoms such as a fever of more than 38 degrees Celsius, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. This is followed by the emergence of rashes after one or three days.

"The emergence of rash is in the form of red rash with a small number, spread regionally, for example, in the arm area, then in the genital area, legs, and others," Tarmizi explained.
