Jokowi Inaugurates Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant, Largest in Southeast Asia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, inaugurated the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) in Purwakarta Regency, West Java, today, Nov. 9, 2023. The project is the largest floating solar farm in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world, with a capacity of 192 Megawatt Peak (MWp).
“We managed to build the largest floating solar power plant in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world,” the President said in his speech at the inauguration event.
The project was made possible through a collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the Ministry of State-owned Enterprises, state-owned electricity giant PLN, and United Arab Emirates-based renewable energy firm Masdar.
The project marks one of Indonesia's big dreams to build renewable energy plants on a large scale.
The state head also said that the Cirata PLTS would boost the region's existing electricity production from Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA), which currently stands at 1,000 Megawatts (MW).
“If [Cirata PLTS] is optimized, it could add approximately 1,000 MWp in the future,” he said.
Jokowi expressed optimism that Indonesia would be able to harness the potential of renewable energy from technologies available in the country, such as solar and wind power plants. The Cirata PLTS is a significant step for Indonesia towards achieving its renewable energy goals.
