TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Despite the current intense calls to boycott pro-Israel products, Indonesian Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia is optimistic that it will not affect this year's investment realization.
"I believe this will have no effect on [investment] and the [investment realization] target of Rp1,400 trillion will be reached," Bahlil said on Wednesday, November 8.
Recently, calls for boycotting pro-Israel products increased in intensity along with the escalation of Israeli strikes in Gaza, Palestine. Some of these boycotts targeted McDonald's and Starbucks.
Depok United Ummah Forum (FUB) also calls for the boycott and even plans to hold a protest in front of a McDonald's outlet next week. "This is one of our forms of protest. It's a joint action with the Islamic Brotherhood Front (FPI)," said the head of FUB Depok Abdul Aziz Assegaf on Tuesday.
The boycott, he said, could be targeted to any type of products. "Boycott all Israeli products, including McDonald's and Starbucks. These are the products of the allies of the zionist regime of Israel, it's better to consume local products," he said.
A similar call was also made by the Labor Party. Its chief, Said Iqbal, urged all workers to boycott Israel-affiliated products.
"The purpose of this boycott is to weaken economic support toward Israel so it ends its military aggression in Gaza," Said Iqbal said in a written statement on Wednesday.
Labor Party, Iqbal said, will be consistent in its support of Palestinians' liberation. He urged the United Nations to be more stern in its effort to call for a ceasefire.
The escalation of Israeli strikes in Gaza began on October 7. Since then, Israel has killed more than 10,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza's Ministry of Health.
