TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake in Maluku with 7.2 magnitude on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 11:52 a.m.WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
BMKG's analysis showed that the earthquake had an updated parameter of 7.1 magnitudes. The epicenter of this quake was located at 6.15 degrees of Southern Latitude and 129.96 West Longitude. To be exact, it was located 255 kilometers northwest of Tanimbar, Maluku, at a 45-kilometer depth.
"Noting the epicenter location and the depth of its hypocenter, this was a shallow earthquake caused by a crustal deformation at the seabed of Banda Sea," said the head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG Daryono on Wednesday. The earthquake had a strike-slip movement mechanism.
BMKG reported that the earthquake triggered minor tsunamis in Damar at 39-centimeter height and Banda at 8-centimeter height.
Until 01:10 p.m. WIB, three aftershocks were recorded with the biggest being 5.6 magnitude.
Daryono urged the residents of Maluku to remain calm and vigilant of hoaxes. He also asked them to avoid damaged buildings.
