TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Jakarta Environmental Office Asep Kuswanto is preparing a water body waste management unit (UPS) to anticipate flooding in Jakarta. One of the measures is to ready the Manggarai Water Gate to manage the waste flooding issue.
Asep mentioned that his office has prepared for all possible scenarios. "We anticipated the possibility of a blockage in the river due to the garbage sent from upstream," Asep said when met at the City Hall on Monday, November 6, 2023.
In addition to the Water Gate, the Environmental Office also prepared waste filters. "We have prepared waste filters, first in TB Simatupang, South Jakarta, and Sodetan Ciliwung," Asep said.
According to the data relayed by the office spokesperson Yogi Ikhwan via WhatsApp messaging, the waste filters is able to manage approximately 230 meter cubic of waste from upstream.
"The waste will be filtered at the border of TB Simatupang, to prevent it from proceeding to the center of Jakarta or the sea," Yogi said.
The Environmental Office also ensured that the heavy equipment used by the government could operate appropriately.
On Sunday, parts of Jakarta were flooded due to the heavy rain and river overflow, spreading to 54 neighborhoods in East Jakarta and South Jakarta.
