TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Red Cross in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry of Indonesia will send humanitarian aid amounting to Rp2.9 billion to the Gaza Strip. The aid will be sent first to Egypt on Friday, November 3, 2023, through Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in East Jakarta.
The Gaza Strip is currently experiencing a bombardment from Israeli forces through air and land. Palestinian civilians in the enclave are facing a crisis with rapidly dwindling supplies of electricity and clean water. Humanitarian aid entering from the Rafah crossing is severely needed.
"Us from the Indonesian Red Cross has prepared the aid that will be sent to Gaza, in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, amounting to Rp2.9 billion," said Niniek Kun Naryatie, a member of the Indonesian Red Cross, also known as PMI in a press conference on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
Some of these aid include body bags, gen-sets, and oxygen tanks if approved. Egyptian Red Crescent Society will be the main actor to distribute the aid to Gaza through the UNRWA.
"We are still waiting for the UN's approval for the types of goods allowed to enter Gaza," Niniek said. The former Indonesian Ambassador to Argentina also added that the goods are no longer stored in PMI's building and have been packed in trucks.
According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, the aid will be sent to Egypt through the country's closest airport to the Rafah Crossing. The ministry has not appointed the exact time to send the air to Gaza on Friday, since it's still considering the type of airplanes to accommodate the goods. Additionally, the flight approval is still being processed due to the nature of the destination.
