Prabowo Declares Jokowi's Son Gibran Rakabuming as Running Mate in Presidential Race

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prabowo Subianto, a presidential candidate backed by the Onward Indonesia Coalition, announced Gibran Rakabuming who is President Jokowi's son as his running mate in the upcoming election after a meeting with coalition party officials in Kertanegara.
“This is a unanimous acclamation, a consensus,” the chair of the Gerindra Party said while being accompanied by all coalition party leaders in Kertanegara, South Jakarta, on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

The Onward Indonesia Coalition, which consists of the Democrat Party, Gerindra Party, Golkar Party, National Mandate Party (PAN), Crescent Star Party (PBB), Gelora Party, and Garuda Party, tapped Prabowo as its presidential candidate.
“We will register with the General Election Commission (KPU) on Wednesday, Oct. 25,” Prabowo added.
Prior to this announcement, three coalition member parties had openly endorsed Gibran as Prabowo's running mate. They are the Crescent Star Party (PBB), the National Mandate Party (PAN), and the Golkar Party.
President Jokowi had also given his blessing to his eldest son. However, he claimed that he did not interfere in the selection of presidential and vice presidential candidates as this was the authority of the political parties.
“It's the parents' duty to pray and bless their children. All decisions are up to him (Gibran),” Jokowi said during the Santri Day event in Surabaya, on Sunday, October 22, 2023.
Prabowo is the last presidential candidate to announce his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
The pair of Ganjar Pranowo - Mahfud Md., nominated by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the United Development Party (PPP), Hanura, and Perindo, and Anies Baswedan - Muhaimin Iskandar nominated by the Coalition for Change including the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the NasDem Party, and the National Awakening Party (PKB) have registered for the next year’s election to the KPU on the first day of the week-long registration period.
