Prabowo Visits Jokowi after Golkar Announces Support to Gibran as VP Candidate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential candidate from Indonesia Maju Coalition Prabowo Subianto visited President Joko Widodo or Jokowi at the State Palace in Jakarta on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. The visit was made not long after the announcement of Gibran Rakabuming Raka's endorsement by the Golkar Party as Prabowo's running mate in the 2024 election.
Based on Tempo's observation at the Merdeka Palace on Saturday afternoon, Prabowo left from the VVIP door or Bali Gate at 16:23, donning a white shirt and brown trousers. His arrival time at the palace was unknown.
Jokowi and Prabowo's meeting was held privately. As of now, it is still unknown the content of the discussion in the meeting.
Prabowo previously attended Golkar Party's national meeting which resulted in support for Solo Mayor Gibran Rakabuming to be Prabowo's running mate.
The Gerindra Party chairman is the only presidential candidate who has yet to register with the General Elections Commission (KPU). He also has yet to officially announce his running mate. Prabowo reportedly planned to choose Gibran as his vice presidential candidate after the Constitutional Court issued the ruling regarding the minimum age limit for vice presidential candidates being 40 years or having experience as a regional head.
The signal that Prabowo would choose Gibran came from the National Mandate Party or PAN. Today, Gibran visited the house of PAN chairman Zulkifli Hasan in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
PAN deputy chairman Viva Yoga Mauladi said that the official announcement of Gibran as a vice presidential candidate or Prabowo's running mate would be done after the Santri Day commemoration event in Surabaya on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023.
"The soonest [the declaration] will be on Monday. Possibly [on Monday], but it's not certain. Well, that's the plan,” said Viva Yoga on Saturday, Oct. 21.
