TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta has been tapped to host the Crisis Management Conference or CMC in May 2024. The conference will discuss disaster mitigation in a number of major cities around the world.
Marulina Dewi, the head of the Jakarta Cooperation Bureau, accepted the host handover from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
Jakarta was chosen as the host city through a selection of proposals by several member cities of the Network for Crisis Management (NCM) and was appointed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as the NCM Secretariat.
“Today, we had the opportunity to learn many new things, including from Kuala Lumpur, Durban, Seoul, Manila, and Tokyo,” Marulina said in Jakarta on Thursday, October 19.
She explained that since joining the NCM, Jakarta has developed a myriad of disaster mitigation strategies. Hosting CMC 2024, she added, could be a benchmark of the city’s achievement in building safety and disaster resilience.
"It's also an opportunity to expand cooperation networks with other cities towards Jakarta's vision as a global city," he said.
Isnawa Adji, the head of the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said the conference would explore the efforts that Jakarta has made to prepare for disasters. These include the establishment of a rapid response team in each sub-district, disaster-safe school initiatives in tandem with governments, academics, agencies, business players, communities, and mass media (Penta helix), and the opening of disaster literacy spaces.
CMC is an annual meeting that brings together 14 cities from 14 NCM member countries. This is an international network for major cities to explore disaster preparedness programs. Jakarta has joined the forum since 2001.
This year’s conference, CMC 2023, was scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan. Apart from Jakarta, delegates from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul, Singapore, Durban, Catalonia, and Brussels were expected to attend the forum.
