TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita is optimistic that Indonesia will be able to hasten the realization of the net zero emissions (NZE) target for the industry sector 10 years earlier by 2050. During the 2015-2022 period, GHG emissions level in Indonesia's industrial sector amounted to 8 to 20 percent of the total nationwide GHG emissions.

Meanwhile, energy utilization for the industrial sector contributed to 64% of the emissions component in 2022, with 24% caused by industrial waste and 12% from industrial process and product use (IPPU).

"The effort of decarbonization in the industry sector is not impossible to achieve. Thus, if the national NZE target is achieved by 2060, we must commit to a quicker NZE target by 2050 in the industry sector," he said during a meeting in Jakarta, on October 11, 2023.

The Ministry of Industry reported that the decarbonization effort has reduced GHG emissions by 53.9 million tonnes of CO2e in 2022 alone. The baseline of business-as-usual emissions without mitigation reaches 292 million tonnes of CO2e and the actual emissions post-mitigation is 238.05 million tonnes of CO2e.

Additionally, the IPPU component emissions reduction target in 2030 is 7 million tonnes of CO2e while the realization the previous year was 7.138 million tonnes of CO2e,102% of the actual target.

"Therefore, a massive and structured decarbonization process is needed," he said.

According to the minister, there are four ways to decarbonize the industrial sector from its energy components. First, the shifting to a more environmentally friendly energy source like solar panels and hydrogen. Second, the utilization of tools to reduce consumption through energy management and efficiency.

The third way is electrification during the production process, and the last is utilizing the carbon, capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology. CCUS is one of the technologies believed to be a game changer for the decarbonization process and energy transition in the industry sector.
