TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Citing Kaspersky's report, the public is wary of the surge of deepfakes, the AI-powered video and voice manipulation technique ahead of the 2024 general elections, to sway public opinions.
"Digital threats such as SMS, email phishing, fake videos, and dangerous sites must be anticipated during the election season in Indonesia next year. It is important for the public to remain vigilant against dangerous content they may come across online during this period," said Genie Sugene Gan, the Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy, APJ & META Regions of Kaspersky, in a press conference on Monday.
Deepfake refers to an advanced method from machine learning and artificial intelligence to manipulate or generate visual and audio content that can more easily deceive. Kaspersky's report shows that there is a significant demand for deepfakes, allegedly targeting specific figures such as celebrities or politicians.
According to Kaspersky, the fare to generate deepfakes ranges from US$300 to US$20,000 each minute. Cyber criminals use deepfakes to conduct fraud, political manipulation, revenge, disinformation, and harassment. At its core, Gan said, deepfake is not an inherently dangerous technology, but it could be if it fell into the wrong hands.
"Thus, we are urging all stakeholders to cooperate and develop awareness and vigilance against deepfake and its potential misuse," Gan stated.
Kaspersky also shares a number of tips to avoid deepfakes. First, ensure all employees and family members are aware of how deepfakes work. Gather information and news from reliable sources since being ignorant will increase the risk of deepfake distribution. Being skeptical of videos and voice messages will not guarantee people are completely free of being scammed, but it helps to avoid it.
Basic cyber security practices also help to minimize the risk of deepfakes. The practices include routine backup for all devices and the use of strong passwords to avoid being hacked.
