TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar believed that the implementation of the blue economy will strengthen the marine ecosystem for its sustainability foundation.
"The blue economy policies must be followed with a concrete step, such as capacity, regulation, and technological development," she said in between a series of AIS Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Monday. The other steps are considering the economic growth, job opportunities, and resilient climate, to an integrated and sustainable ecology and environment.
One of the coastline areas that supports the blue economy is the mangrove ecosystem. "Currently, more than 100 million global residents live within reach of a mangrove forest. Meanwhile, in Asian countries including Indonesia, the majority of residents depend their livelihood on mangrove resources, and mangrove has a high-value blue carbon as part of the low-emissions national strategic development," she said.
She explained that the blue economy will also boost economic growth, a sustainable environment, and social inclusion in addition to strengthening the marine ecosystem. However, she stressed that the current oceanic condition has been hindered by human activities and needs such as food necessity, water, energy, transportation, and trade.
The negative impacts are also caused by illegal fishing, unlawful coastline development, and pollution. These threats will affect biodiversity, and cause climate change. "There are various laws and policies on environmental management, coastline conservation, maritime resources, biodiversity, and fisheries management that support the marine ecosystem," she said.
Meanwhile, the blue economy is one of the focus in the AIS Forum Summit in Bali on October 10 and 11, 2023. AIS Forum Summit is a platform for cooperation between island countries and archipelago states to boost collaboration on climate mitigation and adaptation, clue economy, waste management, and maritime management.
