TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi pledged that a number of incentives and facilities will be provided for state civil apparatus or ASN who are willing to move to the Nusantara Capital (IKN).
He said this was aimed at easing the relocation process. “If there is no incentive, [the relocation] will be slow. It will be different if there are incentives,” he said in his opening speech at the 2023 national meeting of the Indonesian Civil Servants Corp (Korpri) in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
The facilities include official residences, landed houses or apartments. “The relocation costs will also be provided for the husband, wife, and children. There will also be allowances and other facilities,” he mentioned.
The state head claimed that moving civil servants outside of Java was more complicated so incentives were necessary.
He emphasized that the relocation of the capital city was aimed at creating Indonesia-centric which would lead to economic equality as it would no longer depend on Java or Java-centric.
To date, 150 million people, or 56 percent of the country’s total population of 280 million, live in Java. The island also contributed the majority or 58 percent of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
For this reason, Jokowi assessed that Java’s carrying capacity for the population is becoming weaker. In an effort to create equality and development, the capital must be relocated to East Kalimantan. To begin with, the state apparatus must need to move to East Kalimantan.
