TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Regional Secretary Joko Agus Setyono stated that the government will revitalize Block G of Tanah Abang Market in an effort to boost visitors. The revitalization plan will be similar to Sarinah Thamrin.

"Sarinah used to be empty once. But it's full of visitors again, no? We'll similarly innovate [in Tanah Abang] to encourage visitors to come," he said in Jakarta Town Hall on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.

To attract visitors, Joko said, Pasar Jaya regional company as Tanah Abang management could develop the market into a transit-oriented development. Block G will be integrated with Jakarta's public transportation hub. That, he added, will naturally attract the public to visit Tanah Abang.

Jakarta Acting Governor, Heru Budi Hartono, previously said that the market is emptying because there is a shift in the way people shop. "In Jakarta, people prefer to shop online, and of course, we have to pay attention to this fact," he said on September 16. According to Heru, this consumer behavior happens globally, since online shopping is considered more practical and efficient.

The government recently banned social commerce, a decision that is welcomed by a number of sellers in Tanah Abang. "This will revive MSMEs," said Susi, a seller in Block F of Tanah Abang when met by Tempo on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.

The seller hopes the government's plan to revise the Ministry of Trade Regulation No. 50 of 2020 on electronic commerce could be realized. She believes traditional sellers have to work harder to sell their products while competing with imported goods.
