Indonesia Pledges Houses for Asian Games 2023 Medalists

19 September 2023 22:17 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo announced that the government has prepared a house for every medalist of the 2023 Asian Games. He said this reward would not only be for gold medalists but also for bronze and silver medalists.

“[We understand] that the Asian Games is a very tough competition, so this [reward] is an order from President Joko Widodo,” Dito said after seeing off the Indonesian contingent for Asia’s biggest multi-sport event on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

The 2023 Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8, 2023. A number of sports, such as football, would kick off early on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.

In the 19th edition of the Asian Games, Indonesia sent 413 athletes and 161 officials to compete in 30 sports. The contingents have been leaving in stages since the beginning of September.

President Jokowi, who presided over the farewell ceremony for the Indonesian contingents, said he had set a target for Indonesia to finish in the top 10. Meanwhile, Minister Dito predicted that Indonesia could finish in the top 12 with 8-12 gold medals.
