Vehicle Registration Certificate Extension Requires Emissions Test Result, Transportation Minister Says

15 September 2023 22:37 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated that vehicles that failed the emissions test will not be able to extend their vehicle registration certificate (STNK). Without an extension, he said, the registry will be erased and the vehicle will be considered fraudulent.

"Without [passing the emissions test], STNK could not be extended and will receive a ticket. This is not an easy measure we conduct with the police, but the president [Joko "Jokowi" Widodo] already green-lighted it," he said during a national seminar in Jakarta on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Budi urged vehicle owners to participate in emissions tests.

The Transportation Ministry collaborated with several relevant parties to implement this policy. "It's no use for the government to issue a policy if [other parties] ignore them. A collaboration is necessary," he said.

Previously, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar mentioned last month that one of the requirements for STNK extension is to pass the emissions test.

According to the minister, vehicles who has gone through the emissions test will be marked with a sticker. Siti also mentioned that the government has prepared a sanction for vehicles that failed the emissions test.
