Indonesia Issues Early Warning of Forest Fires in South Sumatra

TEMPO.CO, Palembang - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for land and forest fires in South Sumatra. At least 80 hotspots have been detected in the province in the last 24 hours. Most of them are located in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency.

Syafrul Yunardy, Head of the Natural Resources and Ecosystems Protection and Conservation at the South Sumatra Forestry Agency, recorded 37 hotspots on peat and 14 other non-peat areas in OKI.

Based on the data collected from 12 p.m. yesterday to 12 p.m. today, six hotspots were found on non-peat land in Ogan Komering Ilir, 5 hotspots on non-peat in East Ogan Komering Ulu, and 2 hotspots on non-peat in Ogan Komering Ulu.

In addition, hotspots on non-peat land were detected in Musi Rawas (2 hotspots), Muara Enim (1), Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan (1), Prabumulih City (1), and Ogan Ilir (1).

The early warning of land and forest fires is issued for OKI, Ogan Ilir, Banyuasin, Musi Banyuasin, Muara Enim, PALI, Prabumulih, OKU, OKU East, Musi Rawas, and Musi Rawas Utara.
