TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 43rd ASEAN Summit is entering its second day today, Wednesday, September 6, 2023. Today, the Southeast Asian nation leaders will meet with ASEAN's dialogue partners such as the US and China.
The ASEAN Summit in Jakarta is not only participated by ASEAN leaders, but other countries such as Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia, the US, and international organizations like the United Nations.
Today, ASEAN will conduct a meeting with China, South Korea, Japan, the US, and Canada. The bloc's state leaders will also attend the ASEAN Summit Plus Three with Japan and China.
ASEAN and its dialogue partners will discuss the strengthening of economic cooperation between parties. However, several security issues will also be discussed such as the geopolitical climate in Indo-Pacific.
Kamala Harris, leading the US Delegates, arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday evening. "The United States is a proud Pacific power, and the American people have a profound stake in the future of the region," she wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Li Qiang arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon. During his arrival at Soekarno Hatta Airport, PM Qiang stressed his support for ASEAN's centrality.
"I hope to discuss with the leaders regarding important regional cooperation issues throughout the meetings," Qiang wrote in a press release received by Tempo.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also arrived in Jakarta yesterday, Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
The ASEAN Summit was inaugurated by Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo yesterday. The Tuesday meetings were participated by the bloc members.
During his opening remarks, Jokowi stressed that ASEAN will not be a proxy to any power. The diplomatic tension between the US and China in recent years has created a potential for conflict in the region.
“Don’t make our ASEAN ship an arena of rivalry that destroys each other, but make this Asian ship a space to foster cooperation to create cooperation,” he said. “To create prosperity, create stability, create peace that is not only for the region but also for the world."
