TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo welcomed the President of the World Bank Ajay Banga in Merdeka Palace on Monday, September 4, 2023. One of the main agendas during the meeting was the reformation of the global finance system.
Ajay Banga and his delegates arrived at the Merdeka Palace yesterday at around 14:15 p.m. His arrival was welcomed by Jokowi and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, State Secretary Minister Pratikno, and Deputy Foreign Minister Pahala Mansury.
"I'm sure President Banga is aware of the criticism surrounding the World Bank, including from the UN Secretary-General in relation to the lack of attention on the interest of the developing countries," Jokowi remarked.
Indonesia and other developing countries, he said, placed a great expectation on the World Bank to realize a more just global finance system, especially toward developing countries.
According to Jokowi, global uncertainty affected developing countries which necessitated a collaboration between stakeholders. "I want to explore the potential for a collaboration between the World Bank with Indonesia and ASEAN to tackle that challenge," Jokowi added.
During the meeting, Jokowi mentioned Indonesia's commitment to new renewable energy development. Jokowi also pushed for the realization of energy transition and green economy financing and investment.
"[Indonesia] has conducted various breakthroughs including the development of new renewable energy and carbon taxing. However, not all countries are able to fulfill [Indonesia's] need for green financing," he said.
