TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Immigration issued a golden visa for the world figure subcategory with a 10-year period of stay for Samuel Altman, the CEO of OpenAI-the company behind ChatGPT.
Altman became the first foreigner to hold Indonesia's golden visa after its promulgation at the end of August. Altman received the visa as he's included in the category of an internationally reputable person deemed able to have positive impacts on Indonesia.
"There are several categories to golden visa aside from the basis of investment, namely the golden visa given to figures with an international reputation that is able to give positive impacts to Indonesia," said the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim in his statement on Monday, September 4, 2023.
Silmy explained that to acquire the golden visa, one must be recommended by central government agencies.
Meanwhile, Samuel Altman is an international figure behind OpenAI, a US-based artificial intelligence research and deployment company. He caught the public's eye after his success with ChatGPT.
Last June, Altman visited Indonesia to share his knowledge on artificial intelligence. With this golden visa, Silmy hopes Altman could contribute to the development of artificial intelligence in Indonesia.
As a golden visa holder, Altman will enjoy several benefits, namely priority service and checkpoint at the airport, a longer period of stay, facilitated entry and exit to Indonesia, and no need to submit for a limited stay permit.
According to Immigration, issuing the golden visa to Altman is one of the concrete steps to boost the artificial intelligent ecosystem development in Indonesia.
"There is no need for [Altman] to acquire the limited stay permit when he steps into Indonesia. [The government] will spread a red carpet for him as a reward for the resources he could give to Indonesia," Silmy said.
Golden visa is issued for a longer period of stay, reaching 5 to 10 years intended to support the national economy. The legal basis for the golden visa is the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 22 of 2023 and Finance Minister Regulation No. 82 of 2023.
