Top 3 News of the Week: Australia Closes Dual-study Visa Loophole, Aftershocks in Lombok and Bali

1. Australia Closes Dual-study Visa Loophole for Foreign Students

The Australian government said on Saturday, August 26, it will close effective immediately a loophole in its visa rules that allowed international students to enroll for cheaper vocational courses as soon as they arrive in the country.

International students can undertake additional courses along with their core studies called the "concurrent study" rule, which is designed to help prepare them for the job market through short courses.

2. Aftershocks Detected after Powerful Earthquake in Lombok, Bali Today

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitudes rocked Lombok, Bali, and its surroundings at 02:55:32 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) today, August 29, 2023. The National Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake centered in Java Sea, northern Lombok, was followed by two aftershocks.

According to the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, the deep quake occurred as the result of oblique normal faulting, which is the slab-pull activity or the extensional pull of the Australian Plate under the influence of gravity.

3.Jakarta to Implement Grand Design to Tackle Air Pollution

Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono claimed that Jakarta already has a grand design for air pollution control. The design will be implemented through the Air Pollution Control Strategy as a guideline for the provincial government of Jakarta to control air pollution by 2030.

"The next step is to ensure the effectiveness of air pollution control in accordance with the existing law," said the governor after inaugurating the Quick Response on Air Quality Management discussion in Jakarta on Monday, August 28, 2023.
