Heru Budi Meets with Luhut to Discuss Waste-to-energy Policy

31 August 2023 07:24 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Acting Governor Heru Budi Hartono met with Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan on Wednesday evening, August 30. The two discussed plans to improve Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 35 of 2018 concerning the acceleration of the construction of waste-to-energy plants based on environmentally friendly technologies.

“Presidential Regulation No. 35 of 2018 will be perfected,” Heru said at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Jalan M.H. Thamrin, Central Jakarta, Wednesday evening.

The refinement of the regulation was one of the efforts to speed up waste management in Jakarta. In the discussion, waste management will be more flexible because it adapts to the conditions of each region.

“For example, Jakarta is currently best suited to create waste management facilities using the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant method rather than an intermediate treatment facility (ITF),” Heru stressed.

The man who also serves as the Head of the Presidential Secretariat said the waste management needs of each region are different. “So we use whatever technology is best suited to a region's conditions. For example, RDF is suitable for use in Jakarta, while ITF is suitable for use in Surabaya,” he explained.

Heru Budi claimed that the city administration did not ban ITF in Jakarta. However, he emphasized that the government could not afford to build one because it would require a pricey tipping fee.
